One thing is certain: Iranian carpets are some of the most complex and labor-intensive crafts in the world.
It is on the endless green slopes of Fars Province, in central Iran, that the “mother of all carpets” is produced among the first in the world: the hand-woven Persian nomadic carpet.
The process begins with about 1.6 million sheep raised by the shepherds of the Qashqai and Bakhtiari nomadic tribes, which produce the hard, long wool suitable for carpets.
The women take over from there, making the woolen yarn by hand, twisting it with their fingers. The finished yarn is collected and dyed, with natural ingredients, such as pomegranate peel for the intense red or grape leaves for the green. After several days of boiling on a wood fire, the fibers are dried by the cool breeze that blows from the north every afternoon.

Only then does the weaving begin. The weavers, almost all women, spend several months to a year on the loom, weaving and pulling threads by the thousands. Some follow established methods, others create their own. Finally, when the hole is made, it is cut, washed and placed in the sun to dry.

Mr. Zollanvari, who speaks fluent English, was standing next to two other carpet dealers, Habib Bayat and Mohammed Ali Dideroushan, both US green card holders and self-proclaimed lovers.
The punishments were really painful, said Mr. Dideroushan, and for him, at least, they were inexplicable. “Let’s face it, what do carpets have to do with our nuclear program?”

The worrying part, Mr. Bayat said, is that business has not picked up even after the sanctions were lifted earlier this year. With international financial transactions it’s still a problem, he said, “even tourists who come to Iran don’t pay us unless they bring a lot of money.”
Not only that, but Persian carpets are no longer popular even in Iran, with many middle-class Iranians opting for cheaper plastic coverings. Those who have always loved carpets often go for the cheaper Chinese and Indian additions.
“We sell about 10 percent of what we sold more than ten years ago,” said Morteza Talebi, head of Shiraz’s marketing board. This centuries-old store was full of carpet shops, but there were no customers.

Even the first carpet producers, the nomads, became harder to find. Mr. Zollanvari took the reporters to a nomadic camp outside Shiraz. There, men joyfully blew trumpets and fired guns into the air to celebrate the visitors. Women wearing colorful traditional clothes spin wool, while others weave carpets.
But it turned out that many of the “nomads” were retrieving drugs from other parts of the country that amuse the tourists in an effort to keep them clean.
“Many nomads are looking for a job and a better salary,” said Mina Bahram Abadian, a member of an Iranian group that helps nomads and drug addicts. He said that his situation is not so different from the problems faced by many indigenous people around the world.
He said: “Divorce rates are increasing, as is the use of drugs. “They can’t handle all the changes. They became depressed and stopped making carpets. ” The ancient tradition of Iranian carpets goes back to the dramatic geometric patterns reminiscent of the abstract paintings of the 20th century.
