Since the founding of the institution, the museum’s collection was originally housed in the Smithsonian Palace. The Arts and Industries Building, then called the National Museum Building, was built in 1881 to house the institution’s growing number of exhibits. When the stock came out of the second house, the building, Congress authorized the construction of a larger structure. Opened in 1910, it was the first neoclassical building north of the National Mall. The green dome of the building is a landmark on the outskirts of the shopping center.
The museum’s iconic 14-foot-tall, 12-ton African elephant, which debuted in 1959, welcomes visitors to the rotunda. A recent renovation of the Rotunda once installed a hidden compass in the floor.

Sant Ocean Hall highlights the biodiversity under the waves. The 1,500 liter aquarium features a tropical coral reef and a giant octopus. The Butterfly and Plant Pavilion allows visitors to observe the symbiotic relationship between plants and these colorful creatures.
Human cultural history is also shown. The exhibition traces the development of Western civilization from ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt and Greece, as well as the unique cultures and traditions of Africa and Asia. In addition to seeing how people live and work in their natural environment, you also see how they affect these environments. An example of this dynamic relationship is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Djene, Mali’s mud wall, a sophisticated earthen architecture.
Q?rius is the museum’s learning center where children and adults can work in the laboratory and make their own scientific discoveries. Johnson’s IMAX theater shows nature films in 3D. Shows sell out early, so buy your tickets when you get to the museum first. The facility hosts overnight retreats for children ages 8 to 12.

With free admission, the museum is open every day except Christmas. Normal opening hours are 10:00am to 5:30pm. With extended opening hours during the summer. There is very little public parking near the building. The best way to get to the museum is to use the hop on hop off features of the Old Town Trolley.
If you prefer public transportation, the Smithsonian and Federal Triangle subway stations serving the Orange and Blue lines are nearby. You can also use the Archive-Penn Quarter station on the Green and Yellow lines. The best time to visit the museum is from Monday to Wednesday. The museum is very busy on Saturdays and the peak tourist season is from mid-March to the end of July.
There are two entrances to the museum. One is on Constitution Street on the north side of the building. The other connects to the National Mall on the south side. On busy days, one waiting line may be shorter than the other. Before entering the museum, go through a security check similar to airports. While skates, cameras and bottled water are allowed, the museum asks that you do not bring camera mounts, props or aerosol sprays. Service animals are allowed. Visitors are allowed to take images and videos for non-commercial purposes.
