Wetter Pasargadae Iran

Wetter Pasargadae Iran – EM CMD mini-explorer survey of the foothills of the Tol-e Takht mountain: Remains of a shallow area were revealed beneath the stratified soil.

1 An Iranian-French project, carried out since 1999 in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of Iran, has carried out studies on the site of Pasargadae, the first capital of the Achaemenid Empire around 550 BC. It was established in ancient Persia (Fars province, southern Iran). ), around the main excavations. The foundation is an integrated approach that includes geophysical survey, UAV, fieldwork and geoarchaeological survey. The information collected shows that the Achaemenids created a new settlement of several hundred hectares in Pasargadae. The open plan of the royal capital seems to have combined all the famous houses and residences in large park and agricultural areas. Therefore, the map of Pasargadae refers to the top of all topographical maps for large areas, in which geophysics is widely used since the beginning of the project.

The magnetic method was systematically applied to 120 ha using a G858 magnetometer in 2 gradiometer configuration. The results revealed the large canals that defined the Royal Square and its central Royal Garden and a network of cobblestones (Benech).

., 2012). In total, the survey consisted of 1.5 hectares with parts made of stone. A large trapezoidal section. In addition, many Achaemenid settlements have also been identified in the valley (Gondet

3 The magnetic maps helped to organize additional non-invasive studies in the target areas of Pasargadae. Those showing evidence of significant damage by agricultural activities or erosion were recorded by additional EM surveys using GF Instruments CMD meters that were carried out in 2017 and 2018. The evaluation of the EM survey method in Pasargade, based on these results, is one of the projects’ activities of the Franco-German ANR-DFG “Paradise” (grant number: ANR-16-FRAL-0011-01), which started in 2017 focused on the comparative study of Achaemenid sites in southern Iran and the Lesser Caucasus.

The 4CMD Mini-Explorer was used on 10 ha, following a narrow data collection method (1-m profile difference profile) with two objectives. In areas where modern agriculture has destroyed the remnants of the settlement, leaving magnets of unknown size and size, the Mini-Explorer was tested to see if the results could be permanent problems, for example, amorphous magnets It could improve the mapping of regions. . By measuring the steps. The second goal is to uncover faults associated with artifacts that may still be preserved beneath the stratified subsurface by depth measurements.

The 5CMD surveyor was deployed to an area of 16.6 hectares with a long-range data collection system (5-m profile height) outside the protected area. Magnetic maps showed that the area was previously affected by geomorphic processes. A few kilometers east of Pasargade, several palaeolithic floodplains connected by a river can be found all over the place. CMD Explorer mapped the depth at a large scale to reveal the network of channels flowing upstream from the site. It also tested the tool’s ability to map ancient human habitats.

Insights from the EM CMD Mini-Explorer survey south-east of the Royal Gardens: Climate implications

6 The EM survey, carried out in two parts, aims to better describe the ancient planning system and the residential areas identified by magnetic surveys. The soil conditions studied were different: in 2017 it was much drier than in 2018 (wet after rain). In all these samples, very little movement of the conductance measurement is observed. Variables identified by the 2017 survey were found to be unchanged in the 2018 survey (plotted by inverting the 2018 map version in Figure 1). One explanation is that materials with higher porosity and higher porosity are more stable during drying; The water that fills the space in these objects caused a strange signal change. The anomalies found are related to modern irrigation systems that have not been seen on the electrical map. Useful in-stage data was obtained for all years of middle flowering area. The presence of a trapezoidal basin has been confirmed in the northwest. However, some parts of the recorded area showed little difference. Differences in the types of fields between the 2018 and 2017 surveys are not clear.

7 A traveling map discovered in 2018 in the area between Tol-e Sangin mountain and the southern foot of Tol-e Takht mountain revealed many ancient objects that were hidden by the signal noise on the magnetic map (fig. 2). This result of magnetometry is due to the presence of several layers on top of each other and colloidal substances from the nearby surface, which makes the soil very different. The conduction map shows the hydrologic network on a layered surface with solid structures deep within a rectangular area separated by two lines, possibly a retaining wall.

8 The maps obtained by CMD Explorer following the steeply folded lines revealed a network of paleochannels outside the protected area (Figure 3). Geoarchaeological studies have shown the history of these objects before the establishment of Pasargadae. In between are later and scattered deposits that can still be seen on aerial photographs from the 1930s. These deposits appear on the map as small areas. In addition, about 2 hectares of renewable resources have been mapped in the northeastern part of the region. This was similar to the top of the Achaemenid scale. The presence of a mixture of alluvial and anthropogenic sediments may explain the high variability.

9 The high variability of the soil associated with climate makes it difficult to use small EM equipment in Pasargade, which is located in a dry area. Therefore, the data obtained so far should be considered as preliminary information. In addition, the Mini Explorer can map even the most obscure objects and provides additional information on magnetometric results. EM studies appear to be more reliable with the long CMD device. To support these studies, other electronic equipment, MS2 and SM30, were used on the stratigraphic sections in the trenches dug in the geomorphological studies of 2018. The results are still being prepared, but it is expected that a detailed analysis of the characteristics of the soil together with the sedimentary analysis will be possible, thus adds data from the map. In the future, the data from the agricultural areas to the east of the protected area will help to carry out additional studies in the selected areas, for example, to investigate the magnetic field of the said areas. In addition, the geophysical results will be the basis of the sound program in Pasargade to start in 2019.
