Tree Of Life In Garden Of Eden
The second and third chapters of Genesis contain the account of the creation and placement of Adam in the Garden of Eden, Adam finding his mate. All is well until they disobey God’s command, eat the forbidden fruit, and are cast out of the garden. But is this just the old story of mankind’s fall into sin and death? Or are there more?
In The Real Life Garden Of Eden
Whether you understand the Garden of Eden as a literal place or not, it can tell us some interesting and important things. Here I would like to highlight some specific details from these two chapters and then compare them to what we are experiencing today and what we can look forward to in the future.
Genesis 2 describes the garden that God planted in Eden. This garden is described as very fertile and well watered. When God created Adam, He put him in the garden to take care of it. Later, God decided that it was not good for man to be alone and created a companion for him. Adam and Eve are described as naked, but without shame.
Adam is the gardener of God’s garden. A gardener who can eat almost anything that grows in the garden. The garden where God spends his time, apparently walking and talking with Adam and Eve.
There are two special trees in the garden: the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. No instructions are given about the first tree, but eating of the second tree is forbidden under penalty of death. And of course Adam and Eve did what they were forbidden to do, they ate from that tree and ate the results.
Garden Of Eden
Three specific things are mentioned that happen due to the consumption of this fruit. The first is that they knew they were wrong and tried to hide it. They lost their innocence. Second, their labor became difficult and childbirth became painful. And finally they were driven out of the garden to prevent them from eating from the tree of life and thus living forever.
I think too often we see Genesis 2-3 as an interesting story, but somewhat separate from the rest of the Bible. But this is a mistake. Genesis 2-3 tells us what God made us to be and explains why we are not. And the rest of the Old Testament only reinforces this failure in the Garden of Eden. Regardless of your take on the literal meaning of the passage, the story of Adam and Eve is the story of each of us. We come into this world innocent. But each of us ultimately decides to take our lives into our own hands, to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge. And each of us is separated from God.
We see this repeatedly in the Bible. With individuals as well as with Israel, God’s chosen people. There are hints in the Old Testament that God will do something to break our hearts. Something that brings us back to the garden. But in the New Testament we see it fulfilled.
In the New Testament we see God the Son taking on human flesh and becoming one of us. He is, as Paul says, the second Adam (1 Cor. 15:45-47). Jesus became what Adam and all his descendants were to be.

In Genesis 3, the original temptation is in the garden. The temptations that Eve and then Adam succumbed to. There is another garden. This time the Garden of Gethsemane. In this garden, Jesus does not follow God’s will, but does His own will. The same temptations that the first couple faced. But while they failed, Jesus did not. He surrendered to the will of God and went to the cross for us.
There are also two trees of life, though only one bears that name. Adam and Eve were kicked out of the garden to prevent them from eating from the tree and living forever. But at Calvary, Jesus was crucified on a tree. And all who eat of this tree live forever. The tree of life, hidden in the garden, appears again at the cross of Christ.
The last chapters of Revelation describe the New Jerusalem. This passage is a description of the church, prepared as a bride for Christ (Rev. 21:2, 9). Included in this description (Rev. 22:1-5) is a reference to the river of water of life flowing from the throne of God. And the tree of life stands on either side of the river. The throne and the Lamb of God are in the city, and we shall see his face.
Like a garden with a tree of life, God’s presence walks among us. I believe it is no coincidence that this image of the New Jerusalem mirrors the Garden of Eden. These two parts conclude the story of the Bible. The story begins in heaven and ends in heaven. And in between is the story of God’s redemption of our fallen race. They came down from heaven and returned to heaven.

But where are we now? It doesn’t feel like we’re in heaven. And yet, in a way, we are. The New Jerusalem described at the end of Revelation is not just the future. But it still exists. The new Jerusalem is the church, the bride of Christ. And while its full reveal is still in the future, it’s still in the works. It is made up of all those who believe and follow Jesus on their life’s journey.
In the original garden, Adam walked with God. And today we can walk with God personally. Adam lived in innocence before God. Today, the righteousness of Christ is imputed to all who believe (Romans 3:22), and God sees us as holy and righteous (Ephesians 1:4). In the garden was the tree of life. Eating it will give eternal life. And today eternal life is given to all who believe.
The experience of the garden is ours today, even if we do not fully see it. And this is indeed our hope as believers. That the garden experience will be fully revealed in our lives when Jesus appears from heaven and this world is transformed.

Why were there two trees in the Garden of Eden? What do they represent? What happened when Eve and Adam ate from the tree of knowledge? And what does this have to do with us today? These are some of the questions I would like to consider in this post.
Before I do, I want to make a bold statement: the two trees in the Garden of Eden are not separate from the garden, but spread throughout Scripture, closely related to our spiritual walk today, and will eventually be completed. The time of the end as revealed in the book of Revelation.

To understand what I am saying in this post, you need to fully understand the story of Genesis 2-3. God put man in the garden. The garden grew with all kinds of plants, but God chose two trees in particular: the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
