National Museum Of Asian Art Washington Dc – Freer Art Gallery and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, located on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Committed to the conservation, display and interpretation of exemplary works of art, the National Asian Art Museum addresses broad questions of culture, identity and the contemporary world. The museum maintains a unique collection of Asian art, with more than 45,000,000 objects dating from the Neolithic period to the present and originating from the ancient Near East to China, Japan, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, and the Islamic world. Nearly a century old, the Freer Art Gallery also houses a significant collection of American art throughout the nineteenth century. It houses the world’s largest collection of diverse works by James McNeill Whistler, including the famous Peacock.
In 1890, Charles Lang Freer visited artist James McNeill Whistler’s studio in London. The two men would form a long and fruitful partnership. Liberius eventually amassed more than a thousand works by Whistler—including the Peacock Room—as well as a large holding of works by other late nineteenth-century American artists.

Inspired by Asian art and culture, Whistler also focused on Freer’s Orient. By 1906, Freer had added some Asian art and memorabilia to his American collection. He came to Whistler’s belief that the history of art is a “beautiful story” of events and times. And when Freer organized his museum collection, he divided it into monuments “points of contact” between antiquity and modernity, East and West. We reinforce this vision today by allowing the universality of art to connect us all.
